Every year, we celebrate small improvements. And every year, women continue to retire with significantly less financial security than men. The latest reporting from ABC News on the national gender pay gap showed progress, with the gap narrowing to 11.2 per cent. Yet the deeper truth remains unchanged. Women are still concentrated in lower-paid industries, more likely to take career breaks to care for family, more likely to work part-time, and far less likely to retire with financial confidence. Thank you to the journalists at ABC for continuing to shine a light on this issue. @ABC News @Jessica Riga @Emily Clark At Dress for Success Victoria, we see the human impact behind these numbers every single day. We meet women rebuilding after divorce, redundancy, family violence, caring responsibilities or long periods out of the workforce. Women who have spent years putting everyone else first, only to discover that their superannuation balance does not reflect the value of their contribution to society, their families or their workplaces. The reality is confronting. A woman can work hard her entire life and still retire into financial uncertainty. That should concern all of us. Financial wellbeing is not just about income. It is about dignity, independence, safety and choice. It shapes whether someone can leave an unsafe relationship, whether they can afford stable housing later in life, whether they can retire without fear. Globally, the World Economic Forum estimates gender equality is still more than 130 years away. That statistic should stop us in our tracks. Especially because many women do not have 130 years to wait for financial equality. We need earlier conversations about superannuation. We need employers committed to pay transparency and flexible leadership pathways. We need stronger financial education and confidence-building for women at every life stage. We need to normalise women talking openly about money, retirement and long-term security. Most importantly, we need practical action. This is why I believe so strongly in creating accessible Financial Empowerment Programs for women. Programs that build confidence alongside capability. Programs that help women understand superannuation, budgeting, investing and long-term planning without shame or intimidation. Financial empowerment changes futures. Not only for women, but for families and communities. As we approach EOFY, I encourage every woman to take one step toward her financial future. Check your super balance. Consolidate accounts. Ask questions. Seek advice. Start the conversation. Small actions today can change what retirement looks like tomorrow. And for organisations, banks and leaders reading this, this is your invitation too. Real progress happens when we invest in women’s financial futures before crisis occurs, not after. The gender pay gap may be narrowing. But the retirement gap remains one of Australia’s quietest national challenges. It is time we treated it with the urgency it deserves.
